3 Easy and Fun Ideas to Get Kids Excited about Multiplication Facts!

Here are three of my favorite ideas to use to get kids excited to learn the multiplication facts!

1. Make a multiplication craft! Kids love to have a little art project in math! Use Hawaiian Leis (found at party or craft stores), pipe cleaners and the number strip cards (from my resource) to create this fun visual for kids! Directions and details in resource. Students love wearing these home and  using it to practice their facts! Click on picture for link to resource!

2. Use jokes to get kids excited about math! My students LOVE to practice facts if they end result is solving a joke! Here is the link to the Multiplication Mega Bundle (jokes for the year...keep them smiling and multiplying all year long!) Click on picture for link!

3. Use games like Multiplication Bump! Just add dice and game boards and you're ready to go!Click on the picture for link to resource!

I hope your students enjoy these ideas as much as mine do! Happy Multiplying!

#1 Best Lesson on Measurement (and lots of fun, too)!

Use literature to relate to math! Here is an example lesson to tie reading to measurement using the book, Measuring Penny by Loreen Leedy.

1. Read the book, Measuring Penny, by Loreen Leedy to the class and discuss.

2.  Explain to the children that you are going to assign the same measurement homework assignment as the teacher in the story.

3. I’ve attached lots of examples of parts of student’s work that my classes did for this homework assignment. You are welcome to display them for your students as examples.

4. If your students have computer access and parents willing to help them, then it is fun to have them create power points for the assignment. Then they could send you the Google link or Dropbox link to the power point so you could  to show it to the class. However, it is ok to have them make a paper poster instead if technology is an issue.

5. Tell them they can measure anything. Some children get upset if they think they have to measure a pet, like in the story, and they don’t have a pet. I’ve had students measure their siblings, a stuffed animal, hockey stick, really no limit!

6. This is such a fun way to introduce or reinforce measurement using a real life experience and getting parents involved!

Here are some examples from my students! Have fun! I'd love to hear how this lesson worked with your class in the comments below!

"Smile File" - #1 File EVERY Teacher Needs

What is a "Smile File"?
Several years ago a teacher friend shared with me the idea of a "Smile File". She said to get a folder, write "Smile File" on it and keep all of those special notes from students, parents, teachers and administrators in it. I did and it has really been one of the best things I've ever done in my career!

Benefits of a "Smile File":
1. An easy way to keep up with all of those special notes!
2. Source of encouragement when days get tough teaching ( or it's rainy day recess for the third day in a row!)
3. If you're looking for a new job or nominated for an award then use some of the kind words from this folder.
4. Reflect mid-year or end of the year, or as the years go by on individual people who brought sunshine into your life!

What do you need to create a "Smile File"?
1. A file folder
2. A cute cover
3. I have a FREE set of covers to choose from in my TPT store. They are editable so you can add your name, school, year, grade, etc.  You might want to make a new on for each school year! Just click on the picture:

Here are some examples of the kinds of items I've kept in my "Smile File":

I hope you take time today to create your own "Smile File"! I think you will be so happy that you did!

Have a blessed day!

Are you looking for some FUN ideas for organizing your classroom? I'm happy to share some ideas that you might like!

1.    I bought these containers from Costco. They are called, "Creative Options Project Boxes". They sell in a pack of 5 for $19.99. I like to store extra supplies or task cards in them.

2. I bought this box that holds 16 small boxes. Each box holds 4x6 size photos or task cards. I bought this set at Hobby Lobby. It was $34.99, but on sale and with coupon it was cheaper. I've included a couple of pictures of how I use them to organize my task cards.

 Boxes at Hobby Lobby

3.     I like to use these file folders that are closed on three sides and open at the top. This type of folder is another easy way to organize task cards with the answer sheets and recording sheets.

4.  I have seen this set of boxes (16 colored 4x6 boxes) on Instagram from Michaels. I am still looking for them in my area.

Hope you like these ideas! If you have ideas that you use to organize your classroom, I'd love to hear about them in the comments below!

Seven Fun and Easy Ways to Motivate Students to Practice the Multiplication Facts!

Are you struggling with ways to motivate  your students or your own children to  practice those math facts? Well, I have seven fun and easy ways to motivate students you can implement right now!

1. Call the math practice a GAME! Kids love games, so tell them they are going to play a game!

2. Use dice! There are such a variety of dice out there to choose! I like these foam dice!

3. Give each child a blank piece of paper and call it "Sticker Sheet". Then let them choose a sticker as they complete a problem or play the game! I like to buy stickers from the Dollar Spot at Target!

4. Let kids use a calculator to check their work! I like this one that I got at  Mardel Christian and Educational Supply Store. Kids love it because it "talks"!

5.  Let kids use markers to complete some of their work! There is something motivating to kids to let them use different sizes and colors of markers to do their work!

6. Use a fun set of multiplication flashcards and play games like Multiplication War! Here's a set
I like from Teacher's Tools Store.

7.  Let each child choose a prize after the practice or game! I like to find prizes in the Dollar Spot at Target! Here's a picture of my prize basket.

I hope you like these suggestions!

I'd love hear if you like these ideas and what other ideas you have for motivating students to learn those facts!

Just post your comments in the comments section below! I'd love to read them!
